2014 was a historic election for Lehigh County Democrats. Walter Felton is currently the first African American in Lehigh County and the 2nd African American male out of the 67 counties in the State of Pennsylvania to ever be elected as Chair of a Democratic Committee.
Walter has been a resident of the Lehigh County since 1967. Walter attended the Allentown School District from third grade to 11th grade and graduated from Salisbury High School. Walter then joined the U.S. Military, serving a total of six years in the U.S. Army, two years in the Air National Guard, and two years in the U.S. Naval Reserves.
Walter completed 21 years of service in Law Enforcement as a Patrolman, Investigator, Platoon Sergeant, Youth Division Sergeant, and Detective Sergeant with the Allentown Police Department where he received numerous awards ranging from bravery to Police Officer of the Year on three separate occasions from the South Allentown Optimist, the Queen City Lodge Union and the David M. Howells, Sr. Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. Walter has been recognized by State Representatives, Senators and the 15th Congressional District for outstanding achievement throughout his career in Law Enforcement.
Walter is currently serving his ninth year as a Deputy Sheriff with the Northampton County Sheriff Department. Walter served two years as President of the Northampton County Sheriff Union, receiving two awards from the Sheriff Department for Merit and Letters of Commendation.
Walter has served his community for 30 years and worked for the County of Northampton for almost 10 years. He is still serving his community. Walter is passionate about getting people to participate in the democratic process. He rallied a team of 28 committee members called the Blue Shirts to canvas neighborhoods to encourage people to register to vote and be a part of the election process.
Walter’s vision is to register more people to vote than ever before and reinforce the importance of voting. He wants the public to understand the election process and know the candidates that are running for election.
